WHAT I ASK MY HAIRSTYLIST
Looking to refresh your hair for the summer? You came to the right place because today I’m sharing exactly what I ask my hairstylist Hannah from DL Lowry Salon in Nora. I’ll be giving you all the details on the cut, color, maintenance and routine for my balayage brown hair! Don’t worry, I won’t skimp the details. :)
CUT
When it comes to the cut I like to keep it pretty simple. Hannah says I have fine hair but I have a lot of it so I always ask for a blunt haircut which means it’s straight across on the bottom. I think it looks super clean and that’s really trendy right now too! I also ask her for whispy, long layers to help with the movement and create fullness. It really helps with the movement in the middle when I curl it so it’s not so heavy on the ends! If you feel like your hair looks extra poofy on the bottom, try asking for these whispy, long layers. That should help! I have her slightly frame my face but nothing too drastic. Just keeping very natural and long so it blends in to the rest of my hair.
COLOR
Since I’m brunette, I don’t have to get my hair colored very often. I usually do it once in the Spring/Summer and once in the fall, if that. But when I do, I opt in for a natural balayage look. I love lots of bright pieces and ends that compliment my haircut! I keep my natural base color and I like it to have a lot of depth. By that I mean darker at the top and around the hairline we like it bright so it created a melted effect. Like I said, I only get my hair colored a couple times a year so being able to have the color grow out naturally is KEY for me. One thing Hannah does that really helps with that is she doesn’t touch the top layer when it comes to adding color! We like the bright pieces to shine through. Then we make the ends lighter as well to blend together! I use my Pinterest to get a lot of inspiration.
MAINTINANCE
I try and see Hannah about every 8-10 weeks for a haircut to keep it looking healthy and able to grow. I used to think that if I just got a cut a couple times a year that my hair would grow! THAT’S FALSE. It actually is good for your hair to get routine cuts so it can grow thicker and healthier. If I’m trying to grow it out I will usually wait the full 10 weeks.
When it comes to color, I only do that once or twice a year but I do tone it a couple times a year. That keeps the brass out and helps the lighter pieces look bright and healthy all year long! I will have Hannah do this once or twice or I’ll use the Kristin Ess toner that you can buy at Target. It’s obviously not salon quality but if you’re looking for a quick refresh at a cheaper price, it’s a great alternative!
